MAID OR MATRON OF HONOR
Before the big day:
- The matron of honor will help the bride address invitations, select favors and anything else that
involves a decision concerning the bridal party.
- She will host a bridal party or shower with the attendants. She may meet with the best man
and plan a get-together for all concerned.
- She should coordinate a gift from all the bridesmaids.
- She will let people know where the couple is registered.
- She should help select the dresses that
other attendants will wear
- She should confirm the dresses' date of arrival and set up alteration dates.
On the big day:
- She will be asked to assist the bride when getting dressed
- She should hold and keep safe the groom's ring. She will carry the ring down the aisle,
unless there are ring bearers, and present it to the person conducting the ceremony.
- She has the honor of holding the bride's bouquet during the ceremony and lifting her veil.
- After the couple has said their ``I dos,'' she should straighten the bride's veil and train for the walk down the aisle.
- After the wedding:
At the reception, she should stay close to the bride and carry a lipstick, comb,
small mirror, and a needle and thread.
- She will help the bride change and make sure the bridal gown is either sent home with
the bride's mother or take it home herself until the couple returns from their honeymoon.
THE BEST MAN
Before the big day:
- The best man will help the groom choose their formalwear. He will gather the ushers'
measurements and place the order, schedule fittings and perform pick-ups.
- He will select a gift from the groom for himself and the ushers.
- He should arrange a bachelor dinner, or get together with the maid or matron of honor
to plan a joint celebration.
On the big day:
- He will make sure the groom arrives on time on the day of the wedding.
- He should hold and keep safe the bride's ring. He carries it down the aisle and
presents it to the person performing the ceremony.
- He should make sure the official who performs the ceremony is paid.
- At the reception, he should be the first person to deliver a toast to the bride and groom.
- He should dance with all the bridesmaids and maid and matron-of honor.
- When the newlyweds are ready to leave, he should make sure their transportation is ready and waiting.
- He should keep a lookout for riffraff. Historically, the best man was chosen from among the strongest of
warriors in a tribe to defend the bride from kidnappers so the groom could claim her.
After the wedding:
- He should return the groom's formalwear and make sure that all the ushers return theirs as well.
- As one of the favorite duties of the best man, he should present a message from the bridal couple to their parents.
It should say that they are loved and appreciated for hosting the special day.
If the couple has paid for the wedding themselves, the note can say the parents are loved,
which can make the road ahead with in-laws just a little smoother.
